We Have Smash Scoop from Katharine McPhee (And Deets on the Show's Sexy Makeover Next Season!)
I love summer, but I do not love anxiously waiting for my favorite shows to return yet again--Smash included. So after watching Katharine McPhee sing an awe-inspiring a cappella rendition of the National Anthem in honor of Tide's "My Story. Our Flag" Project in NYC's Bryant Park, I was lucky enough to track her down to talk the latest Smash news, Jennifer Hudson, and her must-have current obsessions.
Glamour: Any Smash scoop for us? You know, there’s not that much to scoop on! Well, I can give you this scoop—this is all I know. We start our first table read for the season next week [week of July 9], and so, I’m imagining we’ll get the script the day before. There’s some new castmates that I’ll be meeting at the table read. So, basically we’re doing pre-production, lots of new people.
Glamour: Like Jennifer Hudson, right? Well, she’s coming for three or four episodes. That was a surprise! My producer sent me an email, and he was like, “I just want you to see this before it comes out. We’re really excited!” Also, I’ve met Jennifer a couple of times, and I love her. She’s incredibly talented, and I'm obviously really excited to have her on the show. Hopefully they’ll give us some stuff to do together. So, that’s really the scoop! New everything. I’m excited to kind of revamp. I think we’re going to try and make the clothes a little bit more interesting.
Glamour: What will be the biggest difference between season one and two? I think we’re going to try and edge it up a little bit. Our new show runner comes from Gossip Girl, and I think aesthetically... the way he sees things, and the way he wants people to look, and their hair, and their makeup, and their clothes. I think he’s going to give Broadway a glam makeover, you know? So that’ll be fun because I love that stuff.

My current obsession is my Clarisonic. And I’m obsessed with Clinique Chubby Sticks. They’re almost like crayons, and they come in a gazillion different colors.
The movie I'm so obsessed with I know every word is My Best Friend’s Wedding. [Ed. note: I love that movie, too!]
The album I'm listening to non-stop is Gotye.
The book I'm obsessed with is The Hunger Games series. I saw the movie, loved it, and I love the first book. But I’m just getting into the second one, so we’ll see.
The meal I'm obsessed with is at ABC Kitchen in New York! I'm obsessed with their food. The way they grill their French bread with the olive oil and cheese... and they use seasonal vegetables. I love that place so much.
The cocktail I'm obsessed with: I love red wine, but it has a lot of sugar. So for the summer, I’m kind of into tequila on the rocks, with lime.
The item in my closet I'm obsessed with is my lime-green Valentino purse. My friend says to me every time she sees me, "You always have that purse. You just got it! You need to stop using it every single day, or it’s going to look old.”
The show I'm obsessed with watching is Downton Abbey or Revenge.
Glamour: Would you want to be a guest star on Downton? Oh, I would totally love to be a guest star because I love the costumes, and the furniture, and all that. I wouldn’t want to be a maid. I want to wear all those corsets and costumes.
The next time I have some time to myself, I'm going to take a yoga class tonight. I haven’t been as active as I want to with my schedule and stuff. This is going to be a longer day, so I was like, “I’m going to try and get into a pattern of, after long days, finding ways to not kill myself in the gym, but just go do something cleansing where you just stretch. So, I’m going to do yoga!
My craziest Hollywood moment so far has been... There’s been a lot! A couple years ago I went to the Golden Globes, and I went to Prince's after party. I won’t name names, but I saw a lot of high-profile A-listers… like, I saw a famous actress making out with a very famous actor, and in the same night saw that actress making out with another man--another guy in the same night! I was just like a fly on the wall, and I didn’t really know how I got inot the party—I mean, I know how I got into the party, but I was thinking 'What am I doing here? And why haven’t people removed me from the premises?" But it was kind of fun to see it all unravel.
My current girl crush is Jessica Chastain. First thing, I love incredible talent. She’s so talented, and I just really respect her as an actress. She’s so pretty.
My first celeb crush was New Kids on the Block—Jordan McKnight!
The one thing I could go bankrupt buying isprobably purses and shoes.
The most random thing I keep in my purse is I have a CD of a voice lesson that I took, which is pretty random.
