After five years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes's attorney Jonathan Wolfe. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise's rep tells PEOPLE: "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."

The Rock of Ages star, 49, wed actress Holmes, 33, in an Italian castle in November 2006. They have daughter Suri, 6.


This was Holmes's first marriage and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to the actresses Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and Mimi Rogers.

To be honest, I am surprised and a bit shocked, but not sad about it. Tom has always given off a bit of a creepy and controlling vibe and I'm happy that she's getting away from him. It wouldn't surprise me if the reason was because Katie was sick of the Scientology stuff and/or sick of his controlling nature. But it could also be a more mundane reason that she just wasn't happy or the marriage simply wasn't working.

This is Tom's 3rd failed marriage and it will increase the gossip that he's deeply in the closet.

I always felt the relationship was kind of rushed. Tom didn't help himself at the time with his weird giddiness and his couch-jumping, along with the various other off-the-wall stuff like his criticism of psychiatry and people who had partaken of such. It also felt like the relationship was a little too public, like Tom was trying very hard to make people believe they were a couple and a happy one at that (throughout the relationship, not just lately) and that he was just a normal person.

If it was a sham, idk how I feel about her giving up 5 years of her life + having a baby for money~ I've never felt sorry for her or anything like other people have. No one forced her to marry Tom Cruise. I mean, ngl though, I used to believe that the scientologists did some creepy brainwashing hypnotics on her.

And UGH, I can't deal with all the crazies out there who will still maintain that Suri is Joshua Jackson's child and that he is the love of her life~

Katie apparently was starry-eyed for Cruise when she was younger. Cruise apparently heard about it and then called her up, and then voila they were together. That always seemed a little suspicious. For all we know, Katie could have been a golddigger, and then he expresses interest and she goes for it. On the other hand, maybe Cruise swept into her life and swept her off her feet, and her crush on him caused her to not think clearly until it was too late. Of course, maybe it was just a whirlwind romance like others but then she saw the weird and controlling side of him and after a few years, it got to be too much. She'll get a lot of money out of this for sure.

Yeah, I know she had Tom Cruise posters when she was younger, that he was her biggest celebrity crush, etc....And I literally watched every video I could of her back in 2005 when this first came out up until they got married. I don't doubt that she was interested in him or that he swept her off her feet, but she was just SO weird, not like her usual self at all. And she said the same creepy things over and over again like a robot, and I always suspected that something was off. Her very last interview pre-Tom was NOTHING like her first interview post-Tom. Still think she was knocked over the head and drugged tbh.

I don't really know a lot about him being psychotic, abusive, controlling, etc...I tuned out all that tabloid stuff.

But I def had a really long and vivid (and obvi prophetic) dream a few months ago of Katie leaving Tom and coming to stay with me in my NYC apartment because I was her new BFF and stuff.
