Good news. NBC's advertising sales are up for the 2012/2013 season, and Smash is one of the reasons. Relevant quote:

"Advertisers were most interested in buying time in NBC's highest-rated program, "Sunday Night Football," as well as its hit singing competition "The Voice" and "Smash," the high-profile drama about the making of a Broadway show."

It's the advertising rates that the networks get for their programs that truly counts. That's likely a big reason why Harry's Law got canceled in spite of its larger overall audience.

Exactly. Business Week said that stronger ratings for Smash and The Voice allowed NBC to negotiate ad rates 6 - 7% higher than last year. Also, NBC was the only network to show increased up front ad sales over last year.

If advertisers want to spend money on the show then it'll certainly be around for awhile. I do wonder how much of NBC's $1.8B in ads is for football. Highest-rated plus unlike other things, most ppl watch football live (thus see the commercials).
