Emmy rules crash 'Smash'

Road to the Emmys 2012: Creative Arts - Song

'Let Me Be Your Star' is sung on the show by both Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty.

'Smash' songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were limited by rule to one 'Smash' song in the Emmy competish."Smash," the NBC series about the behind-the-scenes machinations of creating a Broadway musical, has had plenty of great musical moments in its 15 episodes. Nineteen original songs were written, all but one by Tony-winning "Hairspray" tunesmiths Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Unfortunately for "Smash" and its songwriters -- who have created an entire musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, one that may still have a future in the legit theater -- only two are entered in this year's Emmy competition.
Emmy rules permit only a single entry from an "identical team" of songwriters from the same series. So Shaiman and Wittman, who were allowed to submit a single song, chose "Let Me Be Your Star," the showstopping number from the pilot sung by Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty as two actresses vying for the part of the blonde bombshell.
Also submitted from "Smash" was "Touch Me," from OneRepublic producer-songwriter Ryan Tedder and three other writers, for McPhee's sexy performance in the eighth episode when the show's director temporarily wanted a more contemporary sound. That song also leads off the new "Smash" soundtrack.
TV Academy music-branch governor Ian Fraser confirmed that a single team can enter only one song. "I wish there was another way to recognize the many songs written for 'Smash,' which is a really unique situation, but it's too late to change the rules for this year," he said. http://www.variety.c...e/VR1118054874/

Touch Me seems like a weird song to submit, but I wish all three of them could be. I prefer Don't Forget Me over LMBYS but more people know LMBYS
Thank God for Katharine McPhee.

  • Maybe it boosts I Tunes Sales? Or since Dont Forget Me was Shaiman and Scott Wittman as well they had to choose LMBYS or DFM

I too prefer DFM over LMBYS (but not by that much), but perhaps they thought a duet would go over better and maybe the lyrics feel more universal for LMBYS than DFM, which is somewhat more personal in regards to Monroe. In the end, I think either one would have been a good choice. And perhaps Touch Me was chosen as a way to get more song nominations and thus more exposure for the show since it was the only one not written by Shaiman and Wittman

Me too I've come to like DFM much more than LMBYS, it may come to be Kats signature song over time.

Does this mean there's a good chance Kat and Megan will be singing LMBYS at the Emmy Awards?

If they do, I think it would more likely be at the Creative Arts Emmys presentation, where they award the technical awards, though I can't recall if any best song nominations are sung at either ceremony.

Assuming of course if the song is nominated.

Even though only one of their songs was eligible for nomination, the award is already in the bag.

I definitely prefer LMBYS over DFM, so I think they made the right choice.

I'm glad they submitted LMBYS, Touch Me seems like an odd choice......I don't know much about the Emmy system though so we will see.

One "set" of writers can only submit one song so Touch Me is the only 2nd choice left is it not?

Right! And with the Emmy's (and any award show, really), you wanna stuff the ballot with as many options as possible.
