what a fcking awkward and uncomfortable comment to make? and lmao @ Kat taking it as a sincere compliment. "thank you!!"

Besides Simon being completely out of line and dumb as hell in his commentary, Randy&Paula were spot on, but lololol@ how pissed Kat gets.

I love revisitation Kat.

I think Ryan meant it as a compliment to her dress, but didn't realize that it sounded like he inadvertently bashed her singing.

I think he may have been referring to people not hearing simon's comments, which would dissuade them from voting. Kat seemed to not take offense to it and maybe interpretted it that way. Otherwise, if he was referring to her singing, it was an assinine thing to say.

“Ever since I was a little kid, you told me I’d be getting a little brother or sister… You said my sister is in China, she’s waiting for us in China, and I believed you. She’s waiting for us to come and get her. What is gonna happen to her if we don’t go get her?"

I mean I took it more as it was creepy as fck instead of bashing her singing lol. Especially cause her McTaTa's were out in full force that night.

I always took it as Ken said... if people weren't just listening to what Simon said?

I'm pretty positive he was complimenting her looks, or at least trying to with that comment lol, the other one wouldn't even really make much sense to me?

I'm pretty sure Ryan was attempting to make a joke out of the bad comments but kind of failed so hard

Well yeah.. her looks and Simon's comment. He obviously wasn't trying to say she sucked or something.

No, I don't think he was implying she sucked, I think he was trying to compliment how good she looked, but to me it just came out wrong and came out pervy lol

You really think Paula and Randy were right? I thought this was an awesome performance. The first time I really, really liked her tbh. I was 14 at the time so I didn't appreciate her as much early on

It was a really good performance, but yeah they were spot on. The song was too big for her (Randy) and Paula was DEAD on in her cracked out rambling that Kat's "money" and shining moments are in her lower register the more intimate notes and when she's not pushing so hard.

It was definitely not too big for her. Not one flaw in this entire performance IMO

Justin is correct. David Foster agrees.

I don't think these types of songs are necessarily "too big" for her, she just excels more when she doesn't over-do it. It is, however, nice when she breaks out a belt every now and then. Keeps it interesting!

The theme was pretty much "pick whatever song you want" she could have had another moment, but her issue back then was that she wanted to be a big J-Hud type of singer, and that just wasn't her voice. She can for sure belt, but the belting she tried doing often was out of her comfortable range. Not to mention at that point the song was already tired and done 10 damn times. She could/should have done something like "Yesterday" "Feeling Good" "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" I don't know, anything. I love "I Have Nothing" but IMO that just wasn't the song for her on such an open theme like that.

I thought she did a great job. I suppose Foster and Bocelli thought so too, otherwise they would have been having second thoughts about her and we all know that didn't happen. Clive Davis apparently was impressed, since he asked her to serenade Whitney.

Simon apologized, Randy apologized as far as his ego would allow, and Paula probably couldn't remember what she had said.

it seemed kinda orchestrated... like they were trying to manipulate the show. Only because they universally panned a performance that came across pretty good on tv by anyone's standard, and i just don't see how the acoustics in the studio by itself could have produced that reaction from the judges.

I do think Paula's comment was in a lot of ways spot on though and showed why she really does give good critical feedback. Especially at that time in Kat's career (when she didn't entirely have great technique for power stuff), kat's money and magic were her intimate vocals, and to a degree, they still are today. It may be what she does best. The Never Give All The Heart performance (and what those people said in the smash video recap) reminded me of Someone to Watch Over Me for that reason. The thing is, kat does more than just her intimate vocals very well, so it's tough to justify she should be that type of singer. Even then, I think her performance of I Have Nothing is pretty much great except a spot or two. She had more cringe-worthy moments during some other performances, but not so much this one.

“Ever since I was a little kid, you told me I’d be getting a little brother or sister… You said my sister is in China, she’s waiting for us in China, and I believed you. She’s waiting for us to come and get her. What is gonna happen to her if we don’t go get her?"

First off, I believe Kat picked the song because David Foster wrote it, and since he was the mentor for the week, she was trying to impress him or they agreed that she should do it.

Second, Simon and Randy (especially him) had longstanding problems with any Idol contestants (or maybe just the white ones) doing a Whitney song. So I think a large part of their negativity was because they didn't think she should have even touched a Whitney song. And Paula may have thought Kat's middle range was best (and it is) but that doesn't mean she shouldn't tackle a big song sometimes.

I thought she did pretty great with some minor issues and the judges probably didn't need to attack her like they did. But Simon's apology and Randy's half-hearted one probably fanned the flames of Kat haters even more. I think it's likely that Simon apologized because Nigel thought he was really wrong and pushed him into it, along with all the angry phone calls. Or he was a calculating SOB who thought he could get press for an apology.

i really never understood why people felt this song was too big for her. i mean, i remember thinking it was when i heard she was singing it (i remember screaming NOOOOOO WHY KATHARINE at my tv), but she pulled it off so well, imo?

It's good in isolation it's just such a well known huge song that if you don't slay the high notes it kind of does pale in comparison. Like doing "My Heart Will Go On" and not really fully hitting the high notes that everyone knows is coming. She did do a great job with it, but she really should have chose something else and she could have had a real moment.

Corey, I seem to remember she said that she chose IHN because David Foster wrote it and he was mentoring. She could have gone with something else, but it was one of those contrived kinds of things.
