A "Smash" rep confirms that only Messing will be submitted for lead drama actress consideration.

American Idol alum Katharine McPhee and breakout star Megan Hilty have been vying for the lead role of a lifetime in NBC’s freshman Broadway drama Smash.

But NBC and the actress' reps are taking them out of the lead-actress spotlight for the upcoming Emmy season. A Smash rep confirms that the only castmember who will be submitted for lead drama actress consideration is Emmy winner and six-time nominee Debra Messing. The rest of the cast will compete in the supporting categories.

I guess that's understandable. I really hope Kat gets a supporting nom!

Makes sense. Debra and Angelica will get those Emmy nods based on name alone (and some Emmy Clip scenes when it comes to Debra). No chance Kat can get an Emmy nod this season, tho.

lol Debra is NOT getting nominated. You can quote me on that. Angelica will also struggle to make the shortlist. I'd give her about a 25% chance.

Yea I actually don't think Debra will get in. I was about to post that. Angelica, I think she's in. There's nothing Emmy voters like the most than a veteran/Oscar Winner actress. They have nommed other actresses who have done way way less than what Angelica does in Smash.

I think there is definitely a strong chance Debra will be nominated and small chance that either Katharine or Megan will. It would be quite amazing, for sure.
Thank God for Katharine McPhee.

Word.

Circa 2006

NEW YORK — The television academy is facing uncomfortable questions about its procedures after Ellen Burstyn was nominated for a best supporting actress Emmy for a 14-second performance.
Burstyn appeared briefly in the HBO movie “Mrs. Harris,” playing a former lover in a flashback scene reminiscing about Scarsdale diet doctor Herman Tarnower.
She spoke two lines, totaling 38 words, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which measured her on-screen time.
Burstyn is competing against three other actresses: Kelly Macdonald, Shirley Jones and Cloris Leachman.
“Based on the popular vote, this is a legitimate nomination,” said Pam Ruben Golum, spokeswoman for the television academy.
There’s no rule setting a minimum participation requirement for award consideration, but the TV academy is willing to consider one for next year, she said.
For an entrance fee of $200, actors or actresses can be considered for an Emmy, the academy said. Generally, names are submitted for consideration by agents, movie producers or the actors themselves.

Burstyn didn’t submit her name for consideration; it was done by someone at the movie’s production company, according to an executive at HBO who would speak only on condition of anonymity. The network had no comment about the nomination.
A total of 41 actresses were up for nomination in this category; a pool of 2,000 eligible performers, directors or casting directors were able to vote on who should be nominated.
The academy wouldn’t discuss this process, but critics say it’s clear that the nominations were little more than a popularity contest and, based on Burstyn’s brief role, voted upon by a number of people who didn’t even see what she did in the movie.
A blue-ribbon panel that does view the work will select the winner, the academy said.
“The whole incident reveals that the Emmy Awards are a mess. Take them with a grain of salt if you’re planning to watch,” wrote New York Post critic Adam Buckman in an article headlined “Emmy-barrassing.”
A message left with Burstyn’s publicist went unreturned Tuesday.

Debra might get nominated. Hilty might get nominated. Kat won't get nominated because I think you have to actually be playing a real human being to get an Emmy nod?

Debra should not get a lead actress nom...maybe I'm saying that because I don't like her character, but Angelica & Megan or Kat should be submitted (even though the latter 2 wouldn't get one).

i think debra and megan have had some great acting moments. kat was great in the pilot and has had good moments here and there. Angelica has done nothing special imo. i liked angelica in episode 4. that was probs her best episode for me (for acting).

:haha: People eat up those emotional scenes. Doesn't matter if you are actually good or not, as long as you're screaming and crying.

Can they submit scenes for this weeks episode if Karen truly does have an epic moment?

I feel like Debra has shown a lot more of an Emmy worthy performance than Anjelica has. I mean Anjelica is great but she just hasn't had many big moments in the show.

Debra is probably in just because of her TV pedigree and the truth is, she has been turning in a great performance. I'm not sold on Anjelica even though she is an Oscar winner. I'd be surprised if anyone else made it though. The Globes seem more likely for traction since they have a musical category.

most new shows submit the pilot for writing and directing, and to represent the show over all, a while back when I read up on this it said those in the leading category can submit 1 episode, supporting characters can submit two, 5 episodes can be submitted to represent the show/ season

in most cases the actors are in no control in what is submitted on their behalf, sometimes you can search and find out the episodes, so maybe kats will eventually be available

I think the Emmys site (emmys.com) indicates in their nominations page what episodes get submitted for almost everything but the acting categories for some reason.
